PENUMBRA
PRIVACY
Welcome to Penumbra (“the App”), a native macOS client for Sunshine hosts published by Anthology Group. Your privacy matters to us. This Privacy Policy explains how the App handles information. In short: Penumbra does not collect personal data or send it to Anthology Group. The App stores pairing and preference data on your Mac and communicates directly with Sunshine hosts you choose.
Information We Collect
Penumbra does not require an account and does not ask for your name, email address, or phone number. We do not operate servers that receive App usage data, stream content, or pairing details. Nothing you configure in the App is transmitted to Anthology Group.
On-Device Data
Penumbra saves information locally on your Mac using the operating system's standard storage and the Keychain. This includes:
- Saved host connections (such as IP addresses or hostnames, display names, nicknames, and pinned server certificates)
- Apps listed on each paired host and your selected app
- Preferences such as keep-alive interval, connect at launch, and keyboard remapping
- A client identity (certificate and private key) used to pair with Sunshine hosts
This data stays on your device, is not linked to an Anthology Group account, and is not uploaded to us. Deleting the App removes App preferences stored in standard user defaults; you may also need to remove related Keychain items if you want to clear the client identity.
Network Use and Your Hosts
Penumbra is built to connect to Sunshine (or compatible) streaming hosts that you configure. When you pair, connect, or stream, the App communicates over your network with those hosts — for example to discover hosts on the local network (Bonjour/mDNS), complete pairing, launch apps, and receive video, audio, and input channels.
Stream content (screen images, audio, keyboard and mouse input, and optional clipboard text you send to the host) flows between your Mac and the host you selected. Anthology Group is not in that path and does not receive or store it. Your Sunshine host is operated by you or a third party; its handling of data is governed by that software and your own setup, not this policy.
During onboarding, the App may open Sunshine's web PIN page in your default browser so you can enter a pairing code. That page is served by your host, not by us.
Optional Links to Our Website
The About and Help screens include optional links to anthologygroup.llc (for example, our homepage and the Penumbra troubleshooting guide). If you choose a link, your Mac's default web browser opens that page. The App does not send your host configuration or stream data as part of those links. Our website may use its own analytics, as described on those pages.
No Advertising
Penumbra contains no advertising. There are no ad networks or advertising SDKs in the App.
No Analytics or Tracking
Penumbra contains no analytics, telemetry, or tracking of any kind directed at Anthology Group. We do not use Google Analytics, Firebase, crash reporting, or similar services inside the App, and the App does not track you across other apps or websites.
Permissions
Penumbra runs inside Apple's App Sandbox and uses network access to reach the hosts you configure. It does not access your camera, microphone, location, contacts, or photo library. While connected, the App sends keyboard, mouse, and optional clipboard input to the host you are controlling, as part of normal remote-desktop use.
Children's Privacy
Penumbra does not collect personal information for Anthology Group, including from children under 13. Because the App does not send data to us, contains no ads, and includes no in-app tracking, parental concerns are mainly about how you use remote access and what appears on paired hosts. If you have questions about children's privacy, please contact us.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any updates will be reflected by revising the “Effective Date” above.
